What You Can Do With BB Rifles Under 500 FPS
Backyard Plinking
Set up steel spinners, reactive targets, or cans and enjoy fast-paced shooting fun. BB rifles excel at short to medium-range plinking where immediate feedback and high shot counts matter most. Always use a proper backstop rated for steel BBs to manage ricochets safely.
Training New Shooters
Low recoil, easy operation, and magazine-fed convenience make BB rifles excellent for introducing friends and family to shooting sports. Lever-action models like the Red Ryder are especially popular for teaching safe handling fundamentals.
Recreational Competition
Create your own shooting challenges with friends—spinner races, reactive target competitions, or timed drills. BB rifles make casual competition fun and accessible.
Important Safety Considerations for BB Rifles
Steel BBs behave differently than lead pellets, and responsible ownership requires understanding these differences:
Ricochet Risk: Steel BBs bounce off hard surfaces much more readily than pellets. Always use backstops designed for BB shooting and wear eye protection.
Proper Backstops: Invest in a quality BB-rated trap or use soft backstop materials that absorb rather than deflect BBs.
Eye Protection: Non-negotiable for all shooters and anyone nearby. Ricochets can travel unpredictably.
Know Your Bylaws: Even license-free airguns are subject to municipal discharge restrictions. Confirm backyard shooting is permitted in your area.
Secure Storage: Store BB rifles unloaded in a secure location away from unauthorized users, especially children.

Understanding Canadian BB Rifle Laws
BB rifles under 500 FPS (measured with 0.20g projectile) don't require a firearms license in Canada, but responsible ownership still matters:
Age Requirements: Typically 18+ to purchase (retailer policies may vary)
Municipal Bylaws: Check local rules about discharge within city limits—many municipalities restrict airgun use even when federally legal
Safe Handling: Treat every BB rifle as seriously as a firearm—safe direction, finger off trigger, know your target and backstop
Transportation: No special requirements, but transport in a case and keep out of sight to avoid misunderstandings
Storage: Secure storage away from children and unauthorized users is always recommended
Important: Modifying a BB rifle to exceed 500 FPS changes its legal classification and may require licensing.
CO2 Performance in Canadian Weather
Most BB rifles use CO2 power, and Canadian shooters need to understand temperature effects:
Cold weather reduces performance: CO2 loses pressure as temperature drops, resulting in lower velocity and weaker cycling
Keep cartridges warm: Store CO2 at room temperature before use
Rapid fire cools the gun: Shooting too fast can freeze components and reduce velocity mid-session
Bring the rifle indoors: For winter shooting, consider warming the rifle to room temperature before your session
